A gua sha routine can be 1 to 25 minutes long. It is a relaxing form of facial massage that shows instant results. Here’s a simple routine that can be done daily.

Using a gua sha tool, glide the scraper with light to medium pressure up and down the neck, and then work upward (starting at the chin and working toward the forehead) with long strokes from the center of your face and out. Finish with long strokes on the sides of the face, down the neck, and to the collarbone.

A few notes before you get started: Gua sha is not a good idea if you have a tendency to get broken capillaries. Do it with light pressure, so as not to create a lasting redness or bruising. Tools can be found at crystal stores, herbal shops, your esthetician’s office, or online (refer to resources in the back of this book). When purchasing crystals, please make sure they are from a reputable source. Jade rollers can be used in a similar way to create some circulation and lymphatic flow but will not have quite the same effects as gua sha. Gua sha goes a little deeper, covers more surface area, and soothes more muscle tension. With either a gua sha tool or a jade roller, use a generous amount of facial oil of your choosing beforehand. You want there to be a light glide on the skin versus a drag.
